"Seth P. Mobley was born in Washington County, OH on January 15, 1845 [sic]. [I show his birth date as November 7, 1844]
In the spring of 1853, he removed with his parents to Henry County, IA.
In 1855, he entered the office of the Advertiser at Mount Pleasant and began to learn the printers trade.
In 1857, he went to Burlington where he attended school until the winter of 1861-62.
In 1862, he enlisted in Company B, Seventh Iowa Cavalry. He went into the service in Colorado, Dakota and Nebraska. In the summer of 1864, he was made field messenger for Gen. Curtis and served in Missouri. He was then sent on provost duty in southern Kansas. In June, 1865, he was ordered to Fort Kearney, NE. Was soon detailed as government printer. Soon purchased the material and began the publication of the Fort Kearney Hearald. Was mustered out at Fort Kearney, November 24, 1865. For four years after he was engaged in the grocery and stock raising business. January, 1870, he entered into partnership with Mrs. Maggie G. T. Eberhart in the publication of the Platt Valley Independent, and in December, 1871, they were married."
The Platte Valley Independent, a weekly newspaper, was issued at North Platte in November, 1869, and then moved to Grand Island in July, 1870, by Mrs. M. T. G. Eberhart and Seth P. Mobley. The first issue of this paper at Grand Island, NE is dated July 2, 1870. The tone of the new paper was decidedly Republican.
The Grand Island Grange No. 6 was organized in 1872 with S. P. Mobley, master. Central State Grange no. 518 was established in 1874 with S. P. Mobley, master. (They later became consolidated.) In 1876 there were nine granges in Hall County.
"Mrs. Maggie G. T. Mobley was born at Limerick, Ireland, October 23, 1848. Her father was a merchant. The family came to America the next year. Her father died in 1851. The next year she went to St. Marys Convent at South Bend, Indiana. At the age of sixteen taught school at Peoria, IL. In early life exhibited literary taste. Removed to Omaha, October, 1867. To North Platte in 1869, where she taught one term of school and then, in company with Seth P. Mobley, started the Independent. Her name was then Mrs. Eberhart."
[note that Maggie is shown as Mrs. Maggie G. T. Mobley, which should be Mrs. Maggie T. G. Mobley. Her birth name was Margaret Theresa Guerin. After she married and divorced Alvin Eberhart she used his last name until she married Seth. So technically shes Margaret (Guerin) Eberhart Mobley]
